There are many small things in the beginning of the novel that have huge effects on things that happen later in the book the book was just so well thought out. The characters were beautifully done and the plot was incredibly well woven together. In the Amazon she meets an amazing rubber baron named Rom together they challenge the bounds of proper English tradition. Harriet shows some backbone and decides to chase her happiness by running away and joining the dance troupe. Harriet's father is enraged and forbids it. One day at ballet school a man shows up who is planning a Ballet tour through the Amazon he wants Harriet to join the dance company and come with them. As she approaches adulthood her father (who is absolutely against anything but a traditional female role) decides that learning is too masculine for Harriet and ends all of her lessons except for her ballet lessons. He starts teaching her at a young age and Harriet, being exceptionally smart, learns quickly. Harriet Morton is the daughter of a professor. I loved this book to death it was adventurous, beautiful, sweet, and inspiring. I listened to it on audio book and it made an absolutely fabulous audio book. All about ballerinas and a trip to the Amazon jungle. This sounded like a super interesting book. Techland: You were a software consultant before you were a novelist, right? A visual representation of our conversation is below: His new book Freedom, which is out January 7, is even better. It sets a new standard for plausibility and sheer forward velocity in technothrillers. Everything other writers fudge and mumble and technobabble about, he does exactly right.Īnyway, his first novel Daemon - which he initially self-published - rocked me back on my heels. He’s the only seriously talented writer I can think of offhand, besides Neal Stephenson, who can also write code. He knows what routers are and how networks work. I mean, don’t get me wrong, he writes speculative fiction about a superbrilliant artificial intelligence that’s loose on the Net, killing people and seizing the assets of major corporations. Follow Suarez is one of those rare novelists who writes like he’s a) living in the same world we are and b) actually paying attention to what’s going on there. American Prison is both the remarkable story of a journalist who spent four months working as a corrections officer, and a horrifying exposé of how prisoners were treated by a corporation that profited from them. So journalist Shane Bauer, a reporter for Mother Jones magazine, decided the only way to find out what life inside a private prison was like was to get a job at one. It can be tough to know what goes on behind prison walls - and private corrections companies are especially reluctant to open up to outsiders. Now, the only reason I’m reposing this cupcake is because of the frosting issue. Recently I’ve been calling it “Oh my Dog!”, while it’s still in my mouth. But if you just wanna call it Mmmmm, that’s okay too. I dubbed it Little Red Velvet Riding Hood Cupcake. Please try it, and tell me what you think. Several friends who have no gluten or dairy problems could not tell that they are both, one even suggesting I match it up with a gluten-full cake and blind taste test some people for the fun of it. The cake in this cupcake is truly divine – both moist but light, full of cocoa flavor but not too chocolatey. Maybe because I ate several of his fellows before changing frosting tips to see if I could pipe letters, which I did with ease. I swear the cupcake insisted that I write that – I was completely at its mercy. And now that I’m topped with light and fluffy vegan frosting, that’s so spreadable and pipeable, you’ll never wanna stop making me. “I’m the most delicious gluten-and-dairy-free Red Velvet cupcake you’ll ever eat. In The Royal Art of Poison, New York Times bestselling author Eleanor Herman combines her unique access to royal archives with cutting-edge forensic discoveries to tell the true story of Europe's glittering palaces: one of medical bafflement, poisonous cosmetics, festering illness, and, sometimes, murder. The most gorgeous palaces were little better than filthy latrines. Phsyicians presribed mercury enemas, arsenic skin creams, drinks of lead filings, and potions of human fat and skull, fresh from the executioner. Women wore makeup made with mercury and lead. Ironically, royals terrified of poison were unknowingly poisoning themselves daily with their cosmetics, medications, and filthy living conditions. Servants licked the royal family's spoons, tried on their underpants, and tested their chamber pots. To avoid poison, they depended on tasters, unicorn horns, and antidotes tested on condemned prisoners. For centuries, royal families have feared the gut-roiling, vomit-inducing agony of a little something added to their food or wine by rivals to their station. The Story of Poison is the story of power. A hugely entertaining work of pop history that traces the use of poison as a political - and cosmetic - tool in the royal courts of Western Europe from the Middle Ages to the Kremlin today.
